4 Tricks to Simplify Cleaning

With the amount of time I spend thinking about, talking about and actually cleaning things one would think I enjoyed it. No cleaning is not something I enjoy.

Most of the time I'm working on how to make it simpler so I don't have to do so much of it! Or have to do it so often.

Along the way I've discovered 4 tricks that help me so I don't have to work so darn hard on cleaning all the time.

Never leave a room empty handed

Every time I'm in a room I try to find something to take care of. Check to see if there’s anything that needs to be thrown away or that belongs somewhere else and take it with you to either dump in the trash or put where it belongs. Try to get into the habit of looking around the room you’re in before leaving it and grabbing something you can take care of.

Sometimes if I have like 15-30 minutes I'll start picking up things in one room. Then when I head to another I'll pick up something else and take it to it's room then repeat. I'll just keep working on little things moving from room to room. It usually gets those little items that somehow just accumulate taken care of and I'll get a good amount of steps in!

Clean as you go

Cleaning as you go can eliminate a lot of cleaning overwhelm. I clean as I go in several areas. One of my biggest ones is while I’m cooking dinner. I like to be able to put things into the dishwasher as I’m cooking. Instead of just shoving the cutting board and knife into the sink I like to be able to put it right in the dishwasher. It takes the same amount of time and effort plus it’s not left until later.

This one can be tough since it really only works when the dishwasher isn’t full of clean dishes. So be sure to work out a better schedule so you can clean dishes as you go.

Another is cleaning the bathroom sink. For a while I would use the cotton round that I used to clean my face to wipe down the sink. The micellar water cleans my face why wouldn’t it work on the sink? Now that I’ve switched to a reusable face wipe I don’t do that as often. I need to figure out a better system for that!

If it takes less than 5 minutes do it now!

When you see something that needs to be picked up, put away, folded, or just plain thrown away, just take care of it! It’s SO much easier to just get it done right away, rather than just leaving it.

Kevin can be bad at this sometimes but lately he’s gotten into the habit of just dealing with stuff. He’s mentioned numerous times how surprised he is that something he was avoiding because it was so annoying only took a few minutes and now he doesn’t have to think about it.

Develop a routine

I feel like I say this a lot. Clearly, I can’t say it enough though! Routines are so important. Developing a quick daily cleaning routines keeps things under control and makes dedicated house cleaning days so much easier and less overwhelming.

In the morning I make sure that the bed is made once we’re both out. After I’m done in the bathroom I put away everything except my contact case since it needs to dry. In the evening I’ve been trying to put away anything left out on the kitchen counters and wipe down the bathroom counters.

By instilling these and other small cleaning routines each day I don’t feel so overwhelmed when it comes to deep cleaning these areas.
