Wahoo! We've conquered our documents and now it's time to move on to bigger prey. Yup I'm talking about photos. I think most people save photos more than any other item. They're easy to save so many since they don't take up too much space and photos are worth a thousand words so they say. Remember when you're working with your photos and negatives to wear cotton gloves. Both of these are very susceptible to the oils on our hands.
There are so many different tools that can help you preserve your photos. Since my family seems to have an insane amount of photos I decided that I needed to go whole hog and went straight for the High Capacity Photo Box with Envelopes. This bad boy fits up to 1,700 photos. If you don't have so many photos to corral feel free to message me and I can give other recommendations.
You might see a reoccurring theme that's beginning to emerge but I'll say it again. You'll want to start off by pulling together the photos and starting to organize that way. I would highly recommend that you use the same organizing system throughout all of your documents, photographs and other items. It will make way more sense when you're referring to and labeling everything in the same way. As I was going through stuff I found a ton of photos from the 60s and 70s when my mom and dad were in high school and college. Many of them were in the original packaging and it was in bad shape. These were perfect candidates for a housing upgrade.
It seems that lately envelopes are destined to be my new favorite thing! I know I know I'm so lame but seriously I had no idea what I was missing out on with the 80 lb. Text Print Envelopes. They're like photo envelopes you used to get when you took your photos to the drug store with the little pocket in front for the negatives but won't actually harm your photos and negatives since it's made from archival materials.
When you use these make sure to write the subject of the photos on the outside. They hold up to 36 photos in each envelope so if you combine photos you can get more detailed on each line of the front flap. Since the high capacity box has four sections it makes it really easy to split it up between the four family members as I'm sorting through.
With most photos you get negatives. Sometimes we're good about keeping them with the photos but the reality is with most people over the years the negatives have become separated. The Negative Box Storage Kit helps you to start corralling all of those different negatives that might have lost their photo partners.
The 2.4 mil Polypropylene Self-Locking 35mm Negative Sleeves that come with this kit are ideal for potential handling. You're able to protect the negatives but also look at them in the future. I decided to use these sleeves for negatives that didn't have photographs with them. Since I wasn't taking time to look through and scan the negatives at this point, it made sense that I would be handling them again soon.
For organizing and more protection the kit also includes 80 lb. Buffered Text Negative Strip Envelopes. You're able to put up to 12 negatives alone or six in the sleeves in each envelope. So this is the next step to add the sleeves and loose negatives to the envelopes. Be sure to label the tabs according to your organizational system that you started before.
With being able to share photos on your phone at the snap of your fingers they are definitely what most people want to share. While you can scan and share that way there is just something about being able to see and flip through the real thing.
While Gaylord Archival has many options since this was my first time using an archival album I went with the 1 1/2" D-Ring Photo Album Kit. Everything is there for you! You can pick from creme or black colored pages. Since I really love the look of old scrapbooks I went with the back pages.
First, you'll want to figure out what images you want to add to the album. Do you want to do all from one event? Or a number of different ones from your parent’s childhood? Or your own childhood? Figure out what you want to showcase and how you want to showcase them is definitely the most important part. Especially if you're dealing with different sized images you don't want to put down your Self-Adhesive Paper Photo Corners and realize you didn't want to put that odd sized photograph there! How embarrassing right?
Once you've added all your amazing, cute and hilarious photographs it's time to label them. No, I'm not talking about writing on the photo themselves. You almost made me cry that you thought that one! You write on the page using the fabulous silver pen that was included with the kit. I love how the silver looks on the black page. It reminds me of the scrapbooks you see from the 1920s. Put them back into the protectors to keep away oily fingers and you're good to show.
