When the end of January hits Chicago everyone gets excited for Chicago Restaurant Week. This year I got the chance to try out a new meal at an old favorite! My friend Jackie invited myself and other friends to brunch at Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba in Lincoln Park. Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba has long been one of my favorite tapas places in the Chicago area but I'd never been there for brunch.
As part of the set menu we all got to kick of our meal with two pinxtos or bites. I picked the chicken and waffle bite (on the left & below) along with the deviled egg. I could have eaten three more of the chicken and waffle pinxtos. It was savory chicken sausage wrapped in a delicious sweet waffle batter.
The other ladies enjoyed the multi bite pinxtos of citrus french toast sticks and short stacks of pancakes. We couldn't believe how much we got with just our little appetizer bites. Deviled eggs with bacon are anything but evil!
Our main course tapas were all delicious. From the Spanish Cubano (above) to the waffles and bacon mac n cheese below. Everything was rich, filling and just as good as we expected.
The bacon mac n' cheese was probably my favorite of the tapas. It was so deliciously gooey and cheesy. I know that's what you expect from mac n' cheese but it was definitely one of the better ones I've had. It originally came with a poached egg but I abstained from that. The whole runny yolk thing still weirds me out.
My other pick for my tapas with their Spanish shrimp and grits which was actually fried shrimp with chorizo polenta. Grits and polenta isn't something I usually go for but I'm glad I did. With the flavor of the chorizo and the shrimp I really enjoyed this dish.
I enjoyed the food so much I almost forgot to share the amazing drinks. For their brunch Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba hosts a bloody Mary bar. I'm not a fan of bloody Marys but if I was I'd definitely indulge here. With add ins from bacon to olives and all sorts of goodies in between it's a bloody Mary heaven. What I love to indulge in at Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba is their sangria! My favorite is the bright sunny yellow passion fruit sangria. You can enjoy it by yourself or get a pitcher for everyone. Just be careful it can be on the strong side!
It's kind of amazing that we could actually eat any of our desserts after that spread! Especially with them being so incredibly rich. I never thought of Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba as a good place for brunch but now thanks to our Restaurant Week visit it's tops of my list!
